This application note describes a method for the simulation of tapered optical waveguide structures that are to be used as edge couplers for silicon photonic (Si-P) devices. The designs discussed are based on a standard silicon waveguide on buried oxide (BOX) process. Design issues including waveguide modal properties, and tip-width optimization for maximum coupling efficiency, are discussed.
